CUCC Oral History Project The purpose of the Oral History Project is to help us remember our roots and those who have walked among us and helped us become who we are. Items and suggestions for this series are welcomed. The intent is to feature stories that tell the history of CUCC and its members. Cy and Carolyn talk about the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, the Institute of Religion, and other topics from that era. Four video segments that total about 1 hour. Recorded in Raleigh NC on Feb. 28, 2010. Cy and Carolyn King on the 1950s and 1960s Remembering Sarah Hoffman Sarah Hoffman was a well loved member of CUCC who died on September 5, 2003. Recently in the Monday Lunch Group, Edith Sylla passed around some audio recordings made by Sarah as guided meditations. We include two of them here as a way of remembering and honoring Sarah for all she brought to CUCC and to the Monday Lunch Group in particular. Meditation for Enlightenment and Energy (8:48) Letter from Keith Petersen -- October 18, 2001 On October 18, 2001 Keith Petersen wrote a letter to particpants in the CUCC Wednesday night Bible Study group who had been present the evening before. A few days later Keith died. In this recording made in January 2007, Lavon Page reads an extended excerpt from Keith's letter and puts Keith's remarks in context. Those who knew Keith will feel Keith's spirit leap off the page in this reading, and those who were not acquainted with Keith will get a glimpse of a rare and remarkable soul. Radical Christianity -- Collins Kilburn (Jan. 8, 1964) Pastor Collins Kilburn addressed the Congregational Meeting at Raleigh United Church on January 8, 1964. His purpose was to challenge the congregation to rethink its mission for the coming year. He proposed a "radical Christianity" that finds its arena in the world of work and play rather than in the sanctuary of the church building. But he also spoke of the radical nature of the love which binds a congregation together. Have we lived up to Collins' challenge of more than 40 years ago? Radio Commentaries of Nancy Keppel Nancy Keppel was always self-effacing when talking about her many commentaries broadcast on WUNC-Radio in Chapel Hill. "If I can do it, anyone can," she said frequently. But Nancy had a gift, and her wit and charm displayed in her commentaries gives a faint glimpse into the many gifts that she gave to CUCC and all who knew her for so many years. Nancy Keppel Radio Commentaries (12 commentaries) Keith Petersen Reads His Poetry Keith Petersen was an active member of CUCC who died in 2001. His poetry, written mostly in the 1990s, became his passion during his retirement years. The poems available here were recorded by Lavon Page in Keith's kitchen during the summer of 2000.
