A sermon about being
Pentecostal at CUCC (pdf)

“Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed."

Luke begins his answer to his friend’s questions
about why Luke has chosen to follow Jesus,
The Gospel According to Luke 1:1-4

Living your faith!

  • Get to know one new person the next time you are at CUCC. Pass along a brief description of your conversation to Steve Halsted so he can better meet her or his needs.
  • Suggest leads to advertise CUCC events:  event programs, blogs, organizational newsletters.
  • Use a CUCC personal card to pass along information when you’re in conversation.
  • Invite someone to join you at a CUCC event which you think he or she would enjoy.
  • Extend our welcome in new ways by working with the Growth Committee.

“Growth?”  Yuck.  Why are we obsessing with numbers?

Fear not; we aren’t!  CUCC members tend to be uncomfortable with the idea of evangelism.  Our personal histories and our questing personalities mean we’re more comfortable with “seeking” and “journeys” than creeds and “deciding for Christ.”  So as a group we tend to err on the side of not infringing on the spiritual space of others.  At the same time, we’re really glad to have found CUCC and we suspect there are people out there who might find this a spiritual home for which they have longed.  “Growth” is our way of saying we’d like to become more deliberate about inviting people to join their journey to ours.

What does the Growth Committee do?

Our job is to help CUCC do a better job of being visible and being welcoming.  We wonder who might be glad to discover a church like ours and how we might find them.  We chew over methods for advertising and processes for integrating newcomers.  We teach skills to our “evangelism”-averse members.  We connect to the national UCC “God is still speaking,” initiative when that makes sense.  We like to experiment, to learn about new ideas that might suit our congregation. Our work is tangled up with our sister committees:  the Greeters greet; Fellowship helps us enjoy each other; Communications is our media support.

How do you connect to the larger church?

We are a committee of the Welcoming, Fellowship and Growth Ministry.

What do people like about serving on the Growth Committee?

“Finding a congregation where I knew I could invite my closest friends – people who lived and breathed their passion for justice, one friend for whom the image of God as father was painful because of childhood abuse, another who had a same-sex partner … finding CUCC was like being able to breathe again.  I want to extend that same welcome to others.  And I love that the folks on the Growth Committee are excited about doing it in innovative ways.” - Jane
