Appalachia Service Project
Home | Youth

For one week each summer youth and adults from CUCC join a team of about 21 and head to a town in Appalachia to rehab homes.  Projects range from replacing damaged flooring under a leaky toilet to replacing drywall to building a ramp to repairing a roof.  No building experience is necessary – we learn on the job and have excellent project manuals to guide us.  Working in crews of 5-7 of mixed ages, we pick up a project from the previous week’s workers and do what needs done. Homes are selected, materials purchased, tools supplied, and projects organized by ASP staff.  In the evenings we might hear a local folklorist or listen to mountain music or walk to the nearby Dairy Queen.  We sleep on cots or bunkbeds in a local school or community facility; conditions are simple and part of the adventure.

Live your faith!
