Letter from Pastor Jenny Shultz-Thomas

November 7, 2016

Dear Beloved Community Church,

It is with the utmost humility and excitement that I receive the call to be your next Pastor. It is in times like these when our words often fall short of articulating the breadth of our emotions that the words of Frederick Buechner provide a window into our human experience:
“The place God calls you to, is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

As a congregation CUCC has been working on the front lines of justice-advocacy and peacemaking since the church was founded in 1881. This has been a congregation open to the movement of the Spirit in all of her forms practicing the intellectual discipline necessary to provide a relevant and fresh perspective on the still-speaking God, as well as a commitment to the quiet, mystical, ever-changing, ever-present Holy One among us. It is this balance of head and heart faith that honors the hunger within all of God’s creation to both know, and be known by, the God of all of us. As I begin this next leg of the journey with you I can promise that in the days, months and years to come I will seek only to love, honor and encourage you as we take one step closer to living into our beloved Community.

I am thrilled to walk alongside you in this new chapter of our lives together at Community United Church of Christ!

Thank you,
Rev. Jenny Shultz-Thomas
